5 Signs Your Fuse Board May Need Replacing
Your fuse board is something you probably don't think about very often. But it plays an important part in keeping the electrical system in your home safe.
If you live in an older property, you may still have an old fuse board that has been there for many years. So how do you know whether it needs replacing?
Here are five signs that it might be time to take a closer look at your fuse board.
1. Your fuse board is old
If your fuse board still has old-style rewireable fuses or ceramic fuse carriers, it could be a sign that your fuse board needs updating.
Older fuse boards don't have the same level of protection as modern consumer units. If you're not sure what type of fuse board you have, an electrician can take a look and advise you on whether it would benefit from being replaced.
2. There is no RCD protection
RCDs provide an important additional level of protection by quickly switching off the electricity if they detect a fault.
If your fuse board doesn't have RCD protection, it's worth getting it checked by a qualified electrician. They can check your existing board and explain whether replacing it would give you better protection.
3. Your fuse board is damaged or showing signs of overheating
If you notice burn marks, discolouration, melted plastic or a burning smell around your fuse board, don't ignore it. These can be signs that there may be a problem.
You may also hear buzzing or crackling coming from the board. If you notice anything unusual, it's best to have it checked by a qualified electrician rather than trying to investigate it yourself.
4. Your electrics keep tripping
If your circuit breakers are regularly tripping, it's worth finding out why rather than simply resetting them each time.
The problem could be with an appliance, the wiring or the circuit itself. An electrician can investigate the cause and let you know whether the fuse board is part of the problem.
5. You've had work done to your home
If you've had an extension, new kitchen, additional sockets, outdoor lighting or other electrical work carried out, it may be worth checking that your existing fuse board is still suitable for the changes.
If you've made significant changes to your home, an electrician can check that your electrical installation is still suitable for what you're using it for and advise if any changes are needed.
